Rocura covered her face with a dark grey cloth. She hated how she looked, she had always had, since birth, a large ugly, puffy, brown strip that ran all the way down her face. Rocura was born as a slave, beaten cruelly at the age of five. About the age of six they marked her as theirs by burning a scar that ran from her right eyebrow, narrowly missing her eye, down to the left tip of her mouth, to the very base of her neck...But that life was behind her, she was far away from that, now she was to start a new one. Perhaps Sinaportia wasn't the best place, but it was far away from her family and that was good enough. In her old leather bag, a snarl could be heard. "Quiet, Stealth! I don't think these people would like a fox running around and staring at there chickens do you?" She whispered to the bag that was wrapped around her shoulders. The noise made a whimper. "Thats what I thought, I'll let you out as soon as we are away from this market understand?" Rocura said again. The fox wriggled inside her bag, Stealth made a grunt of approval. Rocura had found Stealth when she was 8, he was sneaking around the Chicken House when his foot was caught in a snare, she had let him free and he was her only friend ever since that day. Now Rocura was 15, old enough to marry. Rocura walked across the market and into an alleyway, clutching the cloth tighter around her head. "Here we are, Stealth." She said opening the bag, a furry gray head popped out of the bag and soon the fox was on the ground right next to Rocura's feet as she walked across the alleyway to the next opening away from the market.

Kar stood before the huge gates of the great city Sinaportia. He had listened to stories about the place as a young boy. Now, almost 16 years old, he had left his small village to seek the fortune and power that aparently lay behind the very gates in front of him. He had nothing but his quarterstaff, a small pack of food, and the clothing on his back. He took a deep breath and walked up to the guards. He requested entrance, and within a few moments the gates opened, and he entered the city he had dreamed about for his whole life. But instead of the world of wealth and luxury he had imagined, a bustling, dusty, ordinary marketplace met his eyes. This was not the same city from his childhood stories, but he couldn't turn back now, no, he'd make the best of it. Besides this was only the marketplace, perhaps the rest of the city was the place of his dreams. Perhaps.

Rocura walked along the streets and other small market stalls that couldn't fit there business in the market place. Stealth, the fox padded along by her, snarling if anyone came too close to his dear friend. Rocura examined some of the fish and fruit stalls, almost drooling, she hadn't eaten for a while, except for the few rabbits Stealth managed to catch. Stealth then eyed the chickens and went closer to them, licking his lips and poking his paws through the cages. The shopkeeper noticed the fox and gave him a sharp kick. Rocura ran over, "You leave him alone, he wouldn't eat your stupid chickens! There in a cage!" The shopkeeper grabbed her arm and pulled the cloth off her head. When he saw her face he gasped, and lowered his outstretched hand, he let go of Rocura's arm and backed away "Begone hideous witch, and take your demon with you!" He shouted. Rocura picked up the fox and started to walk faster, forgetting the cloth that covered her ugly face. She came to an alleyway next to the market place and sat down. She clutched her knees and cried. "Not even here I can be treated like everyone else..." Rocura moaned sobbing again, with Stealth sitting next to her, licking her arm.

Kar continued on, walking farther and farther into the city, but there was still nothing exraordinary about the dull, dusty place. He turned a corner into a deserted alley, and found a pile of straw to sit down on. He pulled his small pack off his back and took out a peice of stale bread and his water canteen. There he sat picking absentmindedly at a scab on his knee munching away at his measly dinner. Memories from back home suddenly flooded into his head. His mother's kind face, his father's determination, his sisters honey sweet laugh. Why had he even left in the first place? All he ever needed was his family. Now he was lost, hungry and without a place to stay. With a sigh he stretched out his legs and put his hands behind his head, when he suddenly heard a faint sobbing comming from farther down the alleyway. He stood up and slowly followed the sound. He rounded a corner and to his supprise he saw a girl sitting there crying softly, her face hidden, and a fox by her side. He took a step closer. "Hello?" He said cautiously "Are you alright?"

Stealth saw the boy and growled, baring his teeth. Rocura looked up and stared at the boy, forgetting about her birthmark. "Stealth! Stop it!" She yelled at her fox, then looking back at the boy. "I'm fine....Just a little trouble at the market..." Rocura said, forcing a weak smile. Rocura then remembered about her face and sat up in panic. "Oh dear! I....I'm so sorry, your not frightened are you? I am so sorry! I completely forgot about...." She stopped and turned her face away from the boy.

"No, no, it's okay, you didn't frighten me. ." Kar said reasuringly. "It's alright. By the way, I'm Kar. I just arrived here. I- I'm kind of erm... lost, maybe you could tell me how to get around? You don't have to, or anything, I just was wondering maybe..." His voice trailed off. Kar silently cursed his horrible social skills. Then after a short awkward silence, Kar offered his hand to help her up.
((don't worry, my brain is dead too.))

Rocura uncovered her face and looked at Kar shyly, and took his hand, standing up. "I'm Rocura, and this is Stealth, my fox. I'm new here too, perhaps we can wander around together?" She said, smiling at Kar and picking up Stealth to put him in her bag. "Well, over there is the market, thats all I know of so far, which way would you like to go?" She asked looking at all the different directions there was to choose from.
((Then we can post brainless, idealess posts together!))

"Well we can't go left because that goes back to the market, and that would be pointless because we just came from there." Kar said matter-of-factly. "And if we go right we would hit a dead end. So our only choice is to go forward." With a smile he started off down the alleyway, motioning for Rocura to follow. It was only when they had traveled a few yards did Kar realize that he had actually said something without stuttering, skipping words or saying something foolish. Suddenly everything felt better.

Rocura smiled, finally she had found, or at least run into, someone who actually didnt care what she looked like, besides Stealth. "Alright then oh smart one." She teased playfully "Lets go your way." Rocura picked up Stealth, the fox squrmed as she sat him gentally in her sack again, the fox poked his head out as Rocura started to follow her new found friend, Kar.

As the two walked down the dusty alleyway, Kar couldn't help but wonder about Rocura. Who was she, where'd she come from? A couple times he glanced back at her. Unlike many, he didn't find her face frightening or revolting, no, rather he found it fascinating. The mark gave her character, defined who she was, almost like freckles or a mole. He fell instep beside Rocura, and made an attempt at a conversation. "So you're not from here... I mean that's what you told me... " Kar let out a frustrated sigh, "I'm sorry, I'm- I'm really no good at starting conversations. I- what I ment to ask is, Where are you from?" He looked away, obviously embarrassed. Even around his family he had always gotten tongue-tied, but he had never figured out why.
((OMG Guess what, I got this book from the library, it's called The Sight, and one of the characters is named Kar. Isn't that weird?))

((OGM! Thats freakin' insanity!))
Rocura giggled shyly, Kar was defiantly a strange person to her. She hesitated before tell Kar, "I'm from the outskirts of Umar, I worked next to the castle there, funny how in such a poor town a beautiful castle, palace whatever you want to call it is built, odd really, they could have used that gold for their homes....But instead a castle, go figure." Rocura, thought about that comment for a time, she had always hated how selfish the ruler was, Umar could have been a wonderful town, instead of the awful mud pile it was now. Stealth scowled as he tried to get his front paws out of the sack, but couldn't. Rocura smiled at him and patted his soft furry head.

Kar glanced at Rocura. Umar? He had heard of Umar, it was a dark and evil place, or at least that's what he had heard. He understood why she had left, but had she left a family behind? Did she even have one? He had so many questions, but maybe Rocura was wondering about him. "Yeah, I'm from a tiny village at the very edge of the Killimen desert, we don't have a castle there." Kar paused " Uh, Were you, like, erm , did you work there, in the castle I mean, or what?"

Rocura took a sharp breath as horrid memories flooded through her mind. She remembered how poor her mother treated her, how her father refused to talk to her, how her two sisters, how cruel they were, even Betha, the youngest sibling. Rocura sighed, "No, I lived there, but I guess you could say that I worked there, but not in the way you would think ..." Rocura paused for a little while before continuing "I am the queen's daughter, although I by birth right, am a princess I was and will never be treated like one, because.....Because of my....Scar, my whole family hated me, so I was the servant girl around the castle, my father never spoke to me, my sisters tormented me when ever they could, and my mother....My mother hit me when I was young, and always said to guests that I was not her daughter, but a orphan they found on the streets, I always thought that was a pathetic lie, but it still worked...Anyways, how about you, who where your family?"

Kar stared at her in disbelief, he couldn't imagine what it would have been like, to be hated by your family, just because what you looked like. It was a simply horrible thought, and to imagine that Rocura had gone through that, Kar shuddered inwardly "I- I'm so sorry," He paused a long while, then continued "My father was a merchant. I rarely saw him, but I mean, that's nothing compared to what you went through. I- I had a good life, well, good enough. It was hard, I mean, I- my mother and my sister we lived off the little food we could find in the desert. Everyone in the village were so kind, but I- I listened to the stories of far away places, stories of adventure, riches." Kar sighed. "The stories made my life seem dull. So I, well I came here searching for a better life, but I, I soon realized that I already had a good life, but it's too late, I can't turn back now." As Kar said this the two came to a corner. Small homes and shops, all squished together, lined the street in either direction. Busy townspeople bustled about taking no notice of the newcomers. Kar turned to Rocura "Where to now?"

Rocura smiled weakly, "Thats how it always is....The grass will never be greener on the other side of the hill...Pitty that none of us can see that before its too late......" Her voice trailed off as she remembered some of the times back at her so called home. "Hmm...Sorry got off track, lets see....Lets go over here, that tavern looks lovely, perhaps it might have some nice food as well, I have a few coins to spare, let me treat you to lunch how 'bout?" Hearing this Stealth took a nip at Rocura's sleeve, she patted him on the head and whispered to him "Yes, you can have some of my dish, but you have to keep your head down, I'm sure no one would like a fox in their tavern." Stealth licked his snout and ducked his head back into the leather bag as Rocura entered the tavern. The tavern was a bit dim and some soft music was being played by a man with a string instrument that Rocura couldn't recognize. She looked and saw an empty seat by a small window and beckoned Kar to sit, once she sat down herself.
